Nidra Yoga, often called the art of conscious sleep, is a meditative practice that induces complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation. The term nidra means “sleep” in Sanskrit, but unlike ordinary sleep, awareness is maintained throughout. Practitioners rest in Shavasana (corpse pose) while guided through stages of breath, body awareness and visualization. In this threshold between waking and dreaming, the body heals, the mind releases tension, and consciousness expands into effortless stillness.

Origins & Philosophy

Nidra Yoga originated from the Tantric and Vedantic traditions, where states between sleep and wakefulness were seen as gateways to the Self. Ancient texts such as the Mandukya Upanishad describe Turiya, the “fourth state” - consciousness beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep - as the realm accessed through Nidra Yoga.

In modern times, the practice was systematized by Swami Satyananda Saraswati of the Bihar School of Yoga in the 20th century, who developed a structured method combining body scanning, sankalpa (intention) and visualization. Nidra Yoga has since gained global recognition in mindfulness, psychology and trauma recovery as a science of conscious rest.
