Vipassana, meaning “insight” or “to see clearly,” is one of humanity’s most ancient meditation practices. Rooted in early Indian traditions and rediscovered in Burma (Myanmar) in the 18th century, Vipassana spread globally through a lineage of devoted monks and teachers. The technique is based on self-observation - watching sensations in the body and movements of the mind without judgment or reaction. By observing reality as it is, moment by moment, Vipassana helps break old mental patterns and brings freedom from suffering.

Origins Across Traditions

Vipassana is a core practice of Theravada Buddhism, emphasising direct experience over philosophy. It is closely linked to ānāpānasati (mindfulness of breathing) and satipatthāna (the Four Foundations of Mindfulness). The modern Vipassana movement gained worldwide visibility through teachers such as Ledi Sayadaw, Mahasi Sayadaw and later S.N. Goenka, who helped make Vipassana accessible through silent retreats. Sit quietly with an upright posture and close the eyes. Begin by observing the natural breath (ānāpānasati) without controlling it. Once the mind settles, expand awareness to sensations throughout the body, observing without reacting, judging or suppressing. When thoughts arise, notice them, and return to observation. Practise daily for 10–30 minutes or deepen through dedicated retreat practice.
