Jivamukti Yoga is a modern and spiritually charged method that unites dynamic physical practice with philosophy, music and activism. Founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984 in New York City, Jivamukti means “liberation while living.” The practice invites transformation through asana, chanting, study and service, a vibrant synthesis of ancient yogic principles and modern creative expression. Jivamukti Yoga emerged from the countercultural energy of 1980s New York, blending classical yoga wisdom with art, music and activism. Gannon and Life, both artists and musicians, studied deeply under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Nirmalananda, and other traditional masters. Their vision expanded yoga beyond the mat - integrating Ahimsa (nonviolence), Bhakti (devotion), Nada (sound), Dhyana (meditation), and Shastra (scripture study) into daily living.
